Good Morning everyone, Below you will find the powerpoint and assignment (found on the last slide of the powerpoint) for online learning 7.2. This mini-lesson will look at some of the mythology around plants throughout history. Typically when we think of mythical creatures, we think of dragons and griffons and other magical animals. However, throughout history many great myths have developed around plants! In the powerpoint we will look at some features of myths around plants. At the end you will find your assignment, which is to develop your own story or legend about a plant of your choice. To help you, I've also attached a collection of plant myths from cultures around the world (in file titled "avocado"). Your plant myth can be about any plant you choose and should be at least 2 paragraphs. You will also look at some modern day "myths", or simple misinformation commonly spread about plants online. You do not need to do the assignment for this section. As always, let me know if you have any questions!

Good Monday Morning everyone! I haven't received many of the worksheets from last week, so make sure you finish at least the Punnett square worksheet from Thursday before starting this one. This worksheet is a dihybrid cross and is a little more complicated. I would highly recommend reviewing the dihybrid cross YouTube video from the Online Learning 6.1 post last week if you get stuck. Let me know if you have any questions! Miss you all! -Mr. Dezern
Good Morning everyone! I've attached a worksheet to help you practice your Punnett squares. I would highly recommend reviewing the videos and powerpoint from Monday to help you on the worksheet. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Hello everyone and welcome to Genetics Week! This week we will be starting our animal science unit, but first we need to cover some basic genetics. Depending on whether you've taken biology already, this may be completely new to you, and that's fine! The point is to get you familiar with some basic concepts in genetics so that when you DO take biology you will have some knowledge already. Keep in mind as well that this is a difficult topic, and I would much prefer to be able to teach you this in person to clear up any questions you may have. If you need help with anything this week, please send me an email and we can discuss. The first part of the assignment is to take notes and watch a couple videos. The notes are going to cover the basics of genetics, and the videos will focus more specifically on making Punnett squares, a critical concept in inheritance. We will get more practice on these later in the week. Once again, if you are struggling with this information, please let me know! Genetics is difficult and I really wish we were in the classroom. Also I just really miss you guys! Powerpoint and Notes:

This week we only have one topic to cover: wildlife habitats. There are two attachments found below. One is the wildlife habitat Power Point presentation, and the other is a worksheet examining habitat carrying capacity and the effects of habitat fragmentation. The worksheet can be a little tricky, so let me know if you have any questions. Some general tips are: 1. Read the assumptions carefully (especially the second part of assumption A) 2. Use a calculator to do your math 3. On the second page, ignore the "Procedures" section 4. For the questions on the back, we will be using Cobb County as our map area. For the purpose of this activity, we are going to pretend that all of Cobb County is one big forest. So, you will need to look up the area of Cobb County, and then use your answer from the first page to determine how many mountain lions can live in Cobb County. 5. For number 3 and 4 write "forest" and "100%", respectively 6. For question 6, pretend in our forest you build a giant interstate road right through the middle. How would this disrupt the mountain lion habitat? Would it still be able to access the same amount of food? 7. For question 7, think about if you have ever seen deer around human-occupied areas, and then think about if you have ever seen any mountain lions around human-occupied areas. Once again, please let me know if you have questions! I miss you guys! -Mr. Dezern Assignments:
Good morning everyone, For those of you who have already submitted assignment 4.1 thank you for doing so, I will get feedback to you as soon as possible. Assignment 4.2 will cover the subject of entomology, the study of insects. Insects have a profound impact on agriculture, both positive and negative. In this activity we will look at the basics of insects and how we classify them. First, work through the powerpoint slides and notes. Then, we will work on an insect identification worksheet. The main way we classify insects is by the Order they belong to. For instance, grasshoppers and crickets belong to Order Orthoptera, while dragonflies and damselflies belong to Order Odonata. On the worksheet, you will read a description of an insect and use the reference worksheet pages 9-18 to determine the correct Order being described. Most Orders will have at least one insect that you are already familiar with. Please let me know if you have any questions! Powerpoint and Notes

Good Morning everyone! Hope you had a relaxing and safe Spring break! We are back starting our final 6 weeks of online learning to finish out the semester. The topics we are going to cover for the remainder of the course include wildlife and natural resource management, animal science, genetics, entomology, agricultural machinery, and more. Also, the third greenhouse update video has been posted on YouTube, link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBdT86PjZ84 I've had some questions regarding the option to end the course with your current grade. While I would love to continue moving forward with content, I realize many of you have done incredibly well in my course so far and have other classes and circumstances that would make it preferable to take the grade you already earned. This is absolutely fine and will NOT impact your ability to move to my second-level class next year. If you are finishing my class with an A or a B, that means you did an excellent job during our science, soil, and plant units which would mean you are well-prepared for the General Horticulture course. Please reach out if you have any questions. This week we will continue with our Forestry unit. If you did not finish your tree identification activity, please continue to work on that. The next assignment is a little different and requires some creativity. Forests have often served as inspiration for some of our greatest writers and poets. This week, I want you to write either a poem or a short story about/set in a forest. In the past, my students have written murder mysteries, fairy tales, parodies on popular songs, and strange poems about a tree named Forest Lump that couldn't grow very fast. You will need to use at least 5 vocabulary terms from your forestry notes to describe the forest in your writing. If you are writing a short story it will need to be at least 4 paragraphs and if you are writing a poem it will need to be at least 5 stanzas. I've attached some famous poems for you to reference if you need some inspiration. Get creative, have fun with it, and please make sure to include the correct vocabulary! Please let me know if you have any questions, I look forward to seeing what you all come up with! Poems:
I am posting the next assignment early to give you all more flexibility in completing it. An important aspect of forestry is recognizing the trees in your area. The kinds of trees that make up a forest can tell you a lot about the ecology, or the interactions between living things, in that area, and help us solve problems more easily. In Georgia we have a mixed temperate forest system composed predominately of pine and oak (see below). In this assignment you all will be locating and identifying trees in your area. Just to reiterate, if you are uncomfortable going outside during the quarantine, please let me know and we can work out a different assignment. During this lab you will identify 5 trees in your area. To assist you I have provided the University of Tennessee tree ID guide. It contains many of the common trees in our area, but may not have every single tree. Keep in mind this guide is NOT for ornamental or decorative landscaping trees. To submit this assignment, you will find your trees, use the guide to identify them, and then fill out the attached graphic organizer. To help me check your work, I will also need 2 pictures of each tree: an overall picture so I can see the bark pattern and then a close-up of a leaf would be ideal. You can email it all to me when you are finished. I know this assignment is a little different so please let me know if you have any questions!

Skip to page 29 for the tree profiles. Happy hunting! Welcome to Week 3 of Online Learning! This week we will start a new unit, this time on forestry and natural resources. The objective of this unit is to understand the ecological and economic importance of forests. Forestry is Georgia's #1 industry, so it is a big topic to cover. This week I want to start with the basics of forestry and then move into tree measurement and identification. This week I would like to try something a little different with our lessons. The first assignment will be notes on forestry but the "lab" that goes with the lesson will be an individual outdoor activity that will have you look at trees in your area. I WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR, IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE GOING OUTSIDE DURING THE QUARANTINE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. I am going to be very flexible with how the assignment is handled. The first assignment is an overview of forestry, ppt here: https://www.slideshare.net/VivekSrivastava22/introduction-to-forestry Notes here:
Hey Everyone, Below is your first "check-up" assignment. Try to have it done by Saturday if you can. This check-up will look at US agriculture (King Corn) vs. Global agriculture (Snapshot of Agriculture and Agriculture around the World). Use your notes and any other resources you need to compare the two. Although we did not cover all of US agriculture, try using the agricultural system presented in King Corn as a model.
Also, the second Greenhouse Update video is up on YouTube, link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvPMNf_mz5k
Let me know if you all have any questions, have a great rest of your week! -Mr. Dezern |
