General Horticulture and Plant Science
Course Information Teacher Information Prerequisites: None Name: Will Dezern Fall 2018 Phone: 770-578-3266 ext. 607 Period 4 Office Location: Room 6134 Email: Stanley.Dezern@cobb k12.org Course Description: This course is designed as an introduction for the Plant and Landscape Systems Pathway Program of Study. The course introduces the major concepts of plant and horticulture science. Classroom and laboratory activities are supplemented through supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities. Course Outline: Students who successfully complete General Horticulture and Plant Science will be competent in the following areas: · Develop employability skills required for business and industry · Recognize basic agricultural lab and field safety · Identify plant parts, growth patterns, and reproductive strategies · Determine factors that impact plant growth · Compare and contrast sexual and asexual reproduction in plants · Determine the basic principles of soil science · Identify important plant macro- and micro-nutrients · Explore the use of plant fertilizers in industry · Evaluate the damage to plants caused by pests, weeds, and pathogens · Discuss use of various plant growth containers and media · Describe various plant irrigation methods · Explore plant science careers and opportunities Student Evaluation: Total score will be calculated from the following: Tests (4) 25% Quizzes (15) 25% Classwork 30% Homework (15) 20% Grading Policy: Quizzes and homework will be given on a weekly basis. You will be allowed to drop your two lowest quiz and homework scores. Dropped scores will be factored in at the end of the semester. Late work can and should be submitted as soon as possible. Work submitted three days late will not be graded, resulting in a zero. You will be given an opportunity to correct test questions for partial credit. Test corrections will take place before and after school. The exact time and date of each test correction session will be announced when tests are returned after initial grading. Each student is expected to obtain and maintain a Warm-Up notebook and a classwork/homework folder. These must be brought to class starting week 2. If you are unable to supply either, talk to me and we can work it out. Extra credit will be made available. It is your responsibility to discuss the extra credit assignment with the instructor. The details of the assignment will be discussed in the middle of the semester. Attendance Policy: Students accept full responsibility for making up missed material due to absences. Upon returning from an absence, promptly meet with the instructor to discuss assignments that need to be made up. Daily Procedures: Students will arrive to class promptly and submit any homework assignments to the homework bin marked “Period 4”. Students will then look at the board and read the daily learning objectives. Next, students will locate the Warm-Up question written beneath the daily learning objective and begin answering the question in their Warm-Up notebook. During this time, if the student wishes to discuss any classroom matters, they may do so. If the Warm-Up is answered before time is up, students may read or work on study guides. Questions are highly encouraged. Students will raise their hands if they have a question to alert the instructor. The instructor will note the raised hand, and the student may then ask their question. Bathroom passes can be obtained after first asking permission from the instructor. Plagiarism and Cheating: Neither will be tolerated. Just don’t do it. Assignments that are found to be plagiarized will not be graded and must be redone. Cheating will result in a zero. Classroom Expectations: 1. Arrive to class on time 2. Promptly begin warmup once in class 3. Respect classmates and teacher 4. No eating 5. No drinking (except water) 6. Phones will not be used unless specifically stated otherwise 7.
