The course introduces the major areas of scientific agricultural production and research; presents problem solving lessons and introductory skills and knowledge in agricultural science and related technologies. Classroom and laboratory activities are supplemented through supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities. This course is the prerequisite for all AFNR pathways and is intended for students in grades 8-10. Course Outline: Students who successfully complete Basic Agricultural Science will be competent in the following areas: · Develop employability skills required for business and industry · Relate the role of FFA in personal development · Recognize how agriculture meets human needs · Illustrate safety in the agricultural lab and field · Describe soil formation and soil properties related to agricultural systems · Demonstrate knowledge of agricultural machinery · Identify the different areas of agri-science and their applications · Demonstrate knowledge of animal agricultural systems · Demonstrate knowledge of natural resource management · Apply principles of food science · Relate environmental science to agricultural systems · Explain basic plant science and plant production for food, fiber, and fuel Student Evaluation: Total score will be calculated from the following: Tests 25% Quizzes 25% Classwork 30% Homework 20% Grading Policy: Quizzes and homework will be given on a weekly basis. You will be allowed to drop your two lowest quiz and homework scores. Dropped scores will be factored in at the end of the semester. You will be given an opportunity to correct test questions for partial credit. Test corrections will take place before and after school. The exact times and date of the test correction sessions will be announced when tests are returned after initial grading. Classwork consists of participation, in-class activities, and warmups, each totaling 10% of the classwork score. Points will be deducted from weekly participation grades for violating classroom expectations. Extra credit will be available. It is your responsibility to discuss the extra credit assignment with the instructor. The details of the assignment will be made available in the middle of the semester. Attendance Policy: Students accept full responsibility for making up missed material due to absences. Upon returning from an absence, promptly meet with the instructor to discuss assignments that need to be made up. Plagiarism and Cheating: Neither will be tolerated. Just don’t do it. Assignments that are found to be plagiarized will not be graded. Cheating will result in a zero. Classroom Expectations: 1. Arrive to class on time 2. Promptly begin warmup once in class 3. Respect classmates and teacher 4. No eating 5. No drinking (except water) 6. NO PHONES 7.
