I am posting the next assignment early to give you all more flexibility in completing it. An important aspect of forestry is recognizing the trees in your area. The kinds of trees that make up a forest can tell you a lot about the ecology, or the interactions between living things, in that area, and help us solve problems more easily. In Georgia we have a mixed temperate forest system composed predominately of pine and oak (see below). In this assignment you all will be locating and identifying trees in your area. Just to reiterate, if you are uncomfortable going outside during the quarantine, please let me know and we can work out a different assignment. During this lab you will identify 5 trees in your area. To assist you I have provided the University of Tennessee tree ID guide. It contains many of the common trees in our area, but may not have every single tree. Keep in mind this guide is NOT for ornamental or decorative landscaping trees. To submit this assignment, you will find your trees, use the guide to identify them, and then fill out the attached graphic organizer. To help me check your work, I will also need 2 pictures of each tree: an overall picture so I can see the bark pattern and then a close-up of a leaf would be ideal. You can email it all to me when you are finished. I know this assignment is a little different so please let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome to Week 3 of Online Learning! This week we will start a new unit, this time on forestry and natural resources. The objective of this unit is to understand the ecological and economic importance of forests. Forestry is Georgia's #1 industry, so it is a big topic to cover. This week I want to start with the basics of forestry and then move into tree measurement and identification. This week I would like to try something a little different with our lessons. The first assignment will be notes on forestry but the "lab" that goes with the lesson will be an individual outdoor activity that will have you look at trees in your area. I WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR, IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE GOING OUTSIDE DURING THE QUARANTINE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. I am going to be very flexible with how the assignment is handled. The first assignment is an overview of forestry, ppt here: https://www.slideshare.net/VivekSrivastava22/introduction-to-forestry Notes here:
Hey Everyone, Below is your first "check-up" assignment. Try to have it done by Saturday if you can. This check-up will look at US agriculture (King Corn) vs. Global agriculture (Snapshot of Agriculture and Agriculture around the World). Use your notes and any other resources you need to compare the two. Although we did not cover all of US agriculture, try using the agricultural system presented in King Corn as a model.
Also, the second Greenhouse Update video is up on YouTube, link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvPMNf_mz5k
Let me know if you all have any questions, have a great rest of your week! -Mr. Dezern Good morning everyone and welcome to week 2 of online learning! Week 1 Assignments Please make sure you have turned in all 3 assignments to me from week 1: the case study from the fertilizer power point, the notes on global agriculture, and the snapshot of agriculture of the country of your choice. All the assignments are on the blog and I revised a couple of them to fix formatting issues. Please let me know if there are still any problems. Overall I've seen excellent work, keep it up! Week 2 Assignment 1 Last week we looked at global agricultural systems, mostly to put the United States in context. This week we will be taking a closer look at the agricultural system here in the US. Our agriculture is highly advanced and diverse, making it difficult to look at it all at once. Instead, we will be focusing on the most important agricultural product in the US: corn. This week's assignment is to watch the documentary King Corn (link below) on YouTube and follow along in your notes (below). This documentary goes through many of the complexities in growing corn and the role that corn plays not only in our agricultural system but in our entire society. The documentary is about 90 minutes, so this will be your assignment through Wednesday (30 mins per day). Thursday and Friday we will be working on a summarizing activity. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I will be posting another greenhouse update fairly soon. Have an awesome day, I miss you guys! Hey guys here's the link to the first greenhouse update! Let me know if you have any questions or anything I didn't cover. Next week we'll start identifying different plants we have in the greenhouse and talk about how to care for them more specifically.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkbkOBJN_UE&t=212s Good job getting your work turned in, everything I have seen so far has been good. Keep up the great work! -Mr. Dezern Hey everyone, I forgot to add the text boxes for the power point handout. File should be updated and working now. Let me know if you have any other issues!
-Mr. Dezern Hey guys, Good job so far on your online work! The assignments I've seen submitted have been great. If you have sent me your work, I will get back to you today with feedback. This is our second assignment (week 1 assignment 2). Similar to the first assignment, we will be looking at a power point and filling out notes as we go. The power point focuses on global agricultural production and the factors that impact crop growth in different countries. You need to fill out 4 of the 6 factors on the "Farming around the world handout" and describe how they impact agriculture. The first one, "climate", is already there to get you started.
Afterwards, you will be examining the agricultural system of a specific country of your choice. On the "Snapshot of Agriculture" handout, choose a country (not the USA) and describe the agricultural system of that country using the criteria on the page. You will need to do some independent research online. Do your best; if you cannot find the information we can review it together.
Next week we will closely examine the corn production system in the US. The snapshot of agriculture is meant to give you a reference point to compare our main agricultural system here in the United States with agricultural systems around the world.
Let me know if you have trouble with the Word documents, I had to use a pdf converter so the formatting might be a bit weird. As always, let me know if you have any questions! I will be posting a greenhouse update later in the week for all of you curious about the plants. -Mr. Dezern Sorry if I was unclear earlier, this is as new for me as it is for you all. Just a few points to clear up:
1. You will not get a grade for these assignments during the break. This is an opportunity for you all to learn, plain and simple. I encourage you to do the assignments and let me know if you have questions. 2. There are no "due dates" on these assignments. I will be uploading them periodically but you are under no obligation to complete them the day I upload them. As a general rule I would say try to turn them in within a week, mostly to help me respond with feedback more efficiently. 3. Please submit the assignments directly to me at my school email address. ([email protected]) 4. Stay safe and please email me if you have any questions or concerns! -Mr. Dezern Since we finished plant nutrients in class last week, we will now be learning about fertilizers. Read through the power point today and think about the case study scenarios. Tomorrow, answer the case study questions on the attached word document and submit. Powerpoint:
Assignment:
Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, which will be your main resource for online learning. During this break we will have a number of assignments that you will need to access. Throughout this process, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at [email protected]
Most of the assignments will include a reading resource and a worksheet to accompany. Both will be uploaded together in a blog post. I will send out a remind to let you know new work has been posted. If you have not joined the remind, please send a text message to the number 81010 with the message "@wdeze" to be added. My goal is to have two assignments per week, meaning Day 1 and 3 are spent on the reading resources, Day 2 and 4 are spent on the activities, and Day 5 is reserved for any questions you may have. Work can be emailed directly to me when completed. I will try to get feedback to you as soon as possible. Thank you all for your flexibility and let me know if you have any further questions. The first assignment will be posted shortly. |
